2. Product Overview

A Halbach array is not simply a ring of magnets. It is a magnetisation scheme: the remanent vector of every block is rotated step by step around the ring, in this assembly through a quarter-turn sequence, so that the working side of every block reinforces its neighbours while the reverse side cancels them. The result is a field that exists where you need it and does not exist where you do not — a one-sided magnet with natural self-shielding, without a steel yoke.

The FAIZEAL assembly shown here is a flat-ring, axially oriented Halbach array: a precision-machined ring carrier with segmented permanent magnets bonded into indexed pockets, each block marked with its axial and tangential magnetisation vectors and set at ninety degrees to its neighbours.

Placed under magnetic viewing film, the array shows a bright, concentrated multipole pattern on the working face and a clean, quiet reverse face — visible proof of flux concentration on one side and self-shielding on the other.

We build these arrays as custom components and we design them as magnetic circuits, not as assemblies of bought-in blocks. Segmentation, pole sequence, carrier geometry and grading of the magnetisation pattern are all decided in finite-element simulation against your application, then built, measured and verified on our own process line.

3. The Halbach Family — Configurations We Design and Build

Each configuration below solves a different field problem: where the flux must sit, how uniform it must be, and whether the machine needs torque or field homogeneity. The prototype drawings on this page cover most of them.

Halbach arrays share one principle and take several practical forms. The prototype images on this page span the family; each configuration below is one we routinely design in FEA and manufacture.

Linear (planar) Halbach arrays

The original form: magnetisation rotated block by block along a straight line, concentrating flux beneath the array and leaving the upper side nearly field-free. Linear arrays are the basis of iron-free linear motors, magnetically levitated stages and undulator sources, wherever thrust must be produced without a back iron and without a stray field above the track.

Cylindrical (dipole) Halbach arrays

Bent into a ring, the same rotation scheme produces a uniform field inside the bore and effectively zero field outside it. A dipole Halbach cylinder is the natural choice for compact NMR and portable MRI magnets, beamline dipoles and analysis instruments, because the bore field needs no yoke and the outside of the instrument needs no shielding cage.

Multipole ring arrays for rotating machines

Raise the spatial frequency of the magnetisation pattern and the ring becomes a multipole source: a sinusoidal air-gap field rotating with the rotor. This is the form used in disc (axial-flux) motors and in the magnetic rings of high-torque couplings, and it is the configuration of the assembly pictured. Its rewards are the ones machine designers care about — high torque per unit mass, low torque ripple and a field that does its work at the air gap rather than in a yoke.

Segmented Halbach arrays

An ideal Halbach array rotates its magnetisation continuously; a buildable one uses discrete segments. Choosing segment count is an engineering trade-off between field quality, block size, manufacturability and cost, and it is exactly the trade-off we resolve in simulation before a single block is cut. The array pictured uses a quarter-turn segmentation, with every block's magnetisation direction engraved as an arrow on its face for traceability during assembly and inspection.

Shim-corrected and tunable Halbach systems

Where field homogeneity matters more than simplicity, we add the two refinements shown in the prototype drawings: correcting rings and movable shim pieces. Correcting rings trim the bore field of a cylindrical array; small movable blocks, placed individually, compensate manufacturing tolerances and bring the field distribution to specification.

A further degree of freedom is mechanical tuning: a Halbach ring rotated inside a complementary Halbach stator scales the working field continuously without changing the magnets — a configuration we build for imaging and measurement systems that need adjustable field strength.

Halbach spheres and closed-flux forms

For laboratory and sensing applications where the field must be contained on all sides, the same principle closes into spherical and other fully enclosed forms. These are niche, but they are within our design and manufacturing scope on request.

4. Engineering Advantages

One-sided flux, by physics. Flux concentrates on the working face because the magnetisation pattern makes it so, not because a steel circuit guides it. The working face of a Halbach ring delivers a substantially stronger field than an equal volume of conventionally arranged magnet material, and it does so without back iron.

Natural self-shielding, zero stray field. The non-working side is intrinsically quiet. Instruments, sensors and electronics can sit millimetres from the reverse face without magnetic screening, and neighbouring machine axes are not disturbed.

Higher torque and force per kilogram. Flux that would otherwise be spent saturating a yoke works at the air gap instead. In motors and couplings this shows up directly as higher torque density, and in linear and planar stages as higher force density — with the associated mass saving at the moving part.

Space and mass reclaimed. No yoke means no lamination stack behind the magnets, no flux-return shell around the assembly and, in many architectures, no separate shielding. The ring carrier in the pictured assembly carries the magnets, the mounting interface and the flux pattern in one compact part.

Sinusoidal working field. A properly graded multipole Halbach ring presents a near-sinusoidal field at the air gap, which suppresses torque ripple and cogging and keeps the driven system quiet.

No assembly-induced demagnetisation surprises. The magnetisation of every block is fixed before assembly and verified after it. Neighbouring blocks work with each other, not against each other, so the array does not slowly demagnetise itself the way a badly designed magnet ring can.

5. Target Applications

The Halbach principle earns its keep wherever mass, stray field and axial space are all constrained at once. Five duties dominate enquiries, and each is described below with the reason the array wins there.

Robot joints and direct-drive actuation

Joint motors want maximum torque in minimum volume, with no gearbox to add compliance and backlash. A multipole Halbach ring in the stator raises air-gap flux density without a yoke, which shrinks the motor, lightens the arm and improves the torque-to-inertia ratio that determines how well a robot accelerates.

Disc (axial-flux) motors

Axial-flux machines live and die by the air-gap field, because their working face is the stator face. A flat Halbach ring concentrates flux exactly there, supports an ironless or slim-rotor construction, and gives the short axial length that makes axial-flux motors attractive for robotics, e-mobility and aerospace.

Axial magnetic couplings

A pair of opposed multipole Halbach rings transmits torque through a separation wall with no contact and no seal. The one-sided flux property works twice here: more flux crosses the gap for the same magnet volume, and the field outside the coupling stays low enough for adjacent bearings and sensors.

Semiconductor wafer stages

Lithography and inspection stages combine vacuum, cleanliness and magnetic sensitivity. Iron-free Halbach-driven planar and linear motors produce thrust without a magnetised back iron behind the stage, without particles from wearing laminations, and without stray fields reaching the measurement optics beneath the array's silent side.

Medical imaging and MRI

Portable and dedicated-field MRI systems are built on dipole Halbach cylinders: a uniform bore field with nothing outside it to shield. Corrector rings and movable shim pieces, of the kind shown in our prototypes, refine the bore field to imaging homogeneity, and mechanical tuning of nested arrays allows the field strength to be set per examination or per research protocol.

Further duties

Maglev and contactless transport stages, particle-beam undulators and dipoles, magnetic bearings, sensing and separation instruments — anywhere a field must be strong on one side and absent on the other.

Notes for Publishing

The prototype figure supplied is a technical illustration from the magnet community showing different Halbach array configurations, including movable pieces and correcting blocks for shimming. It is suitable as an engineering illustration, but confirm its licensing terms before publication, or replace it with photographs of FAIZEAL's own shim-corrected prototypes.

Keep the viewing-film image beside the assembly photo: the film is the evidence for the one-sided flux claim, and technical buyers will look for it.

No numeric parameters have been included, as requested. Performance statements are qualitative and physics-based, so they remain accurate across the full product range.
